Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

Dragons walk among us! And they’re adorable!…

What would you do if you met a giant green dragon in the middle of mountain woods? Kobayashi was too drunk to be scared, and frankly too drunk to remember precisely what happened, but apparently she saved the dragon’s life, and invited it to her place. That’s what she manages to piece together when, the next morning, the dragon shows up at her door!

Taking the form of a human maid, Tohru the dragon convinces Kobayashi to accept her as a live-in maid, to show her gratitude. Also because Tohru fell hard in love with Kobayashi, who doesn’t seem either happy or troubled by Tohru’s rather lustful antics. And that’s how Kobayashi’s life gets much more interesting: in addition to her work as a software developer (writing Python) and occasional evening drinking out with a colleague who’s a “secret otaku”, she now gets to teach Tohru about this world, and meet several other dragons.

This series is a light-hearted slice of life comedy. Tohru’s love for Kobayashi is the main plot element, but the romance is not very developed: Kobayashi’s occasional blushes are, for most of the series, the only indication that she’s not completely indifferent to Tohru’s feelings. This, plus the frequent jokes about breast sizes, and the various secondary characters, makes it clear that the story has been written for the kind of boys who wouldn’t be caught dead reading or watching romance. The character dynamic reads closer to the standard harem anime than to the slow-burn love story that it could have been.

Despite all that, the series is still fun and enjoyable, if a little underwhelming in places. If you want more romance with a similar touch, YAMADA Yuka has worked on other series where she was less constrained, for example “私に天使が舞い降りた!” (Wataten! An Angel Flew Down to Me) or “恋する小惑星” (Asteroid in Love).

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is available from Manga UK on 17 August, 2020.
